What is diclofenac cream used for?

Diclofenac topical solution is used to treat pain and swelling caused by osteoarthritis of the knees. Diclofenac topical patch and topical system is used to treat acute pain caused by minor strains, sprains, and contusions (bruises).

What are the side effects of diclofenac cream?

Topical diclofenac may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • dryness, redness, itching, swelling, pain, hardness, irritation, swelling, scaling, or numbness at application site.
  • acne.
  • stomach pain.
  • constipation.
  • gas.
  • dizziness.

How long does it take for diclofenac topical gel to work?

Voltaren Emulgel contains 1.16% of diclofenac diethylammonium in a gel form. It is suitable for 3-4 applications a day for short-term pain relief, or for longer periods up to 2 weeks. It is proven to reduce acute pain within one hour of application.

Does diclofenac cream make you sleepy?

The drug works by blocking a particular enzyme in your body. When the enzyme is blocked, your body decreases the amount of inflammatory chemicals it makes. This helps to reduce inflammation and pain. Diclofenac topical gel may cause drowsiness.

Can you use too much diclofenac gel?

Taking too much diclofenac sodium does not usually cause serious problems. The person may have some stomach pain and vomiting (possibly with blood). However, these symptoms will likely get better. In rare cases, a blood transfusion is needed.

How effective is diclofenac cream?

The topical diclofenac arm showed an improvement of 42.9% for pain, 39.3% for physical function, 40.5% for stiffness and 44.45% for pain on walking [43]. Roth et al. showed that the improvements with the topical diclofenac solution continued for up to 12 weeks compared to the vehicle control arm [44].

How long does diclofenac gel stay in your system?

When you stop taking diclofenac tablets or capsules, or stop using the suppositories, the effects will wear off after about 15 hours. When you stop using the gel, plasters or patches, the effects will wear off after 1 or 2 days.
