How deep should a trug be?
You should experiment in the VegTrug with different varieties as some are more crisp than others! Sow about 2cm deep in rows in the spring and then thin the plants out to about 30cm between the plants. You can re-plant the thinning’s into another row (or another VegTrug) because they do transplant easily.
Are Vegtrugs any good?
Adequate Quality. The fabric liner was simple to place inside the planter and held up well when soil was dumped into the container. The wood smelled really nice when I opened the box (it’s made out of “FSC-certified, sustainable, plantation-grown fir”) but it’s a little soft.
Do I need to line my VegTrug?
Every VegTrug is supplied with its own ready-made liner. This needs to be fitted before filling your VegTrug with compost as it will keep the compost separate from the wood and will maintain it in the best condition.
Can you stain a VegTrug?
The added advantage is that you can choose to keep the natural finish of the wood by using the Protek ‘Clear Tough Coat’ product or can stain the VegTrug with any colour from the range with a single coat of the ‘Wood Protector’ range first and then a coat of the Clear Tough Coat to finish.
How many bags of soil do I need for a VegTrug?

Carrots. Carrots are another deep-rooted crop that thrives in the VegTrug. I plant a row of them down the center where they have the full depth to grow. But, even if you don’t want to take up the most valuable space in your VegTrug with carrots you can still grow them.

What do you put on the bottom of an elevated garden bed?
You can fill the bottom of a raised garden bed with a number of organic materials, including straw, grass clippings, wood chips and leaves. Place cardboard – or any suitable weed barrier material – over this organic layer, weighing it down with a few bricks or pegs.
What should I line my VegTrug with?
vegetable growing compost
We would recommend using a general purpose vegetable growing compost in the VegTrug. However, we would add a percentage (say 20%) of John Innes #3 mixed through the soil as this is heavier and will help maintain some moisture stopping the VegTrug from drying out.
Should I line my raised garden bed with plastic?
Avoid lining your garden beds with plastic, as this prevents drainage and could drown your plants’ roots. If you have a weed and pest problem, consider installing a combination of metal mesh and fabric or hardware cloth and cardboard to get both benefits at once.
How long does VegTrug liner last?
two to three seasons
Every VegTrug comes with a pre-formed liner, but they can be replaced if needed. The VegTrug Replacement Liner is constructed from finely woven polypropylene, and each liner should last two to three seasons before beginning to break down.
How often do you water a VegTrug?
every 2-4 days
Water the soil well initially. But, once the soil has retained water, it will only need watering every 2-4 days, depending on weather conditions. For the first couple years of VegTrug use, you can get away with simply top dressing: take away the top 6 to 8 inches, redress with nice fresh compost and feed.

Filling The Bottom Of Your Garden Beds Since you’re putting your highest-quality soil on the surface, whatever’s underneath will need to drain off an excess of moisture. Avoid using materials like rocks on the bottom of your raised bed, as this can create an artificial water table that will prevent good drainage.
How do you line a garden trug?
line it with thick plastic as it’ll help the wood survive longer. I lined a large trough-shaped wicker basket with thick binbags ( rubble sack density) which I overlapped and stapled in. The overlaps allow for drainage. It stands on bricks to stop it getting too damp underneath and to deter ants.
What is the best material to line a raised garden bed?
