First mentioned in the 11th century, Iserlohn was chartered in 1237 and was famous in the Middle Ages for armaments and light metalware. Although the city was burned down in 1712 and was the scene of a rebellion in 1849, the 11th-century St. Pankratius Church and the Oberste Stadtkirche (c. 1350) survive.
